Canada is one of the most renowned countries in the world for its high quality of education. It is home to some of the leading academic institutions. Follow the step-by-step guide to apply for a student visa.

Step 1: Research

Do your research well and investigate courses, universities and their locations. Make sure to look for employment prospects and available scholarship opportunities before you choose your course and institution.

Step 2: Choose your course and institution

Remember that only DLI (Designated Learning Institution) can admit international students. Although you can switch courses easily according to the Canadian academic setup still it is better to compare your options beforehand and choose a course that suits you the best.

Step 3: Take the language proficiency test

Every student will have to prove their proficiency in English or French to successfully gain entry to Canada. For French you can opt for TEF, DALF, DELF or TCF. IELTS is the preferred test for proficiency in English.

Step 4: Apply to universities

Apply to your shortlisted universities and do not apply at random as you will have to consider the application fee as well. Make sure to give accurate information in application forms.

Step 5: Study permit

After an institution is ready to admit you, you should apply for study permit. Your application must be accompanied by acceptance letter, passport and documentary proof that you have adequate finances to study in Canada.

Step 6: Student visa

If your application is successfully selected, you will receive a letter of offer and the next task is to apply for your student visa. Here is student visa checklist,

  • Evidence of enrollment in a recognised educational institution
  • Evidence of language certification and guardian consent
  • Evidence of funding
  • Passport size photographs and copy of the current passport
  • Vaccination results, if required

Make sure to go through the Canada student visa process and check your visa requirements.

Step 7: Travel planning

You can now start planning to travel to Canada. Your study permit will have a start date and remember before that you’ll not be able to enter to Canada.
